 Boyle Community Notes Week beginning 12th May (Week 19)


THE LOUGH KEY CLASSIC
The 60/120 routes & King of the Mountain Challenge takes place on Saturday May 16th starts and finishes in Boyle Co Roscommon. Enjoy the beauty of Lough Key County and take in the views from the Curlieu Mountains in this challenging event. Sign on in the Sports Complex on Friday 15th May from 7pm until 8.30pm and Saturday 16th from 7.30am until 8.45am. Starting time on Saturday 16th will be 9am for the 120k and King of the Mountains with the 60k starting soon after at 10am. Refreshment will be served after the event. Showers will also be available. MAY ACTION MONTH FOR TIDY TOWNS
We need everyone to get out and do their bit please on Friday May 15th for a massive cleanup meeting on The Crescent at 6.30pm. We are asking for 2hrs to do a blitz of all approach roads. Please come out and help, bags and gloves provided and Refreshments afterwards.  Let’s get into the Community Spirit on Thursday May 21st Sweep Hour. We are asking every premises/business owner/tenant to come out with your brush at 12 noon and sweep the pavement 12 noon in front of your premises. We will arrange the road sweeper for the following day. Let’s make this a major event.

KING HOUSE SALON SESSION
Ciaran O Maonaigh is a fiddle player from Donegal. A noted musician he is no stranger to touring and his virtuosity and charismatic stage presence, make him a natural performer. This time he in on the road with Caitllin Nic Gabhan, three times winner of the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil on concertina and a regular performer at festivals and in concert halls around the world. This pairing brings together two of the finest instrumentalists on the Irish traditional scene and is brought to you in association with Age & Opportunity as part of Bealtaine 2015. Curlew Walkers Club
The next meeting of the club will take place on Saturday 24th May meeting on the Crescent at 11am. This will be a Climb/Grade A at Nephin with your leader being Beverley James contact no 087 9905 217. Please confirm times with Leader or web site prior to each walk www.walkingboyle.com.

DUCK RACE FUNdRAISER
A Duck Race will take place on the Boyle River on Saturday, May 30th commencing at the bridge on Bridge Street at 1pm. Ducks will cost €5 each - 1st Prize, €500, 2nd Prize €200 and 3rd €100. Cards are being distributed around the town so please make sure you get your duck early! Your Support is most appreciated between 4pm & 6pm.Saturday, 4th July between 3pm & 5pm. All proceeds in aid of Boyle Courthouse Project.

Padre Pio Pilgrimage
The annual Padre Pio pilgrimage to Holy Cross Abbey, Co Tipperary will take place on Sunday 31st May. The pilgrimage will be led by the new Archbishop of Cashel & Emly, Dr. Kieran O'Reilly. A bus will leave The Crescent, Boyle at 8am sharp. For all enquiries please contact Moya on 071 966 2110

Registration for Toughest Muckers
Ireland’s Toughest Muckers challenge in Lough Key Forest Park will take place on June 13th 2015. Online registration for the event is now open. The organisers hope to run two events per year. To register log on to www.toughmucker.ie

Boyle Golf Club
Thanks to all who supported the weekend golf and the Quiz and Curry on Friday 1st May night. The Quiz was won by the Egan family of Moira, Vincent, Lorcan and Paddy (parachuted in from Oughterard), 2nd Kathleen Hanmore, Marie Kennedy, John Compton (Strokestown) and Gary Carty. A Special thanks to Susan and Brendan for organising and sponsoring prizes, Mary for the lovely food, to Vincent and Gary for looking after the Bar and to Frank O’Mahoney for his sponsorship.  Thanks also to Strokestown Golf Club for their support. Thursday 30th April saw the Men’s competition won by Gerry Carty 27pts, 2nd Gary Carty 27pts, and 3rd Ross Andrew 26pts.  Fridays scramble was won by Charlie O’Donnell, Carmel Keenan & Michael Rush, (courtesy of an eagle on the 8th), 2nd Marie Kennedy, John Compton & Kathleen Hanmore.  A special well done to Kathleen and Marie who were prize-winners in their first scramble (a sign of things to come), 3rd Sean Heslin, Regina McLoughlin & Eamon Perry. Date for your diary is the Committee Cup on Saturday/Sunday May 30th/31st. This will be the first “Major” of the year and open to Ladies and Gents. Format is 18 hole stroke with Ladies playing Saturday and Gents on Sunday. The top ladies and gents will play a final nine holes on Sunday evening. There are two 18 hole qualifiers during May for those wishing to get cards in. The Horse and Summer Show Classic takes place this Saturday June 6th. Details to follow. Members are reminded that 2015 membership is due, thanks to all have paid to date.

The pace will be very leisurely and totally focussed on the social aspect of cycling.
We will cover whatever distance you are comfortable with and stop for tea/coffee and refreshments during or after the spin.
Current members will accompany you every step of the way.
If you were thinking of getting back on your bike this year, these Social Sunday spins are for you.
Make new friends, get helpful advice on cycling and bike maintenance, feel fitter, get confident on the road.
Our first Social Sunday will be February 22nd at 10am from the clock in Boyle.

A cycling helmet is compulsory. Everyone is welcome.
BOYLE FARMERS MARKET
The Market is open from 10am to 2pm each and every Saturday in the grounds of King House, Boyle. If you would like to enjoy the best locally grown fresh and organic produce, then a trip to Boyle Farmers’ Market on Saturday should be on your agenda. There is a wide range of seasonal produce, including organic fruit and vegetables, homemade jams and marmalade, organic free range eggs, fruit juices, gluten free/ sour dough/ spelt bread and all kinds of delicious home bakes are available every week. Alongside the food stalls are a number of crafters selling their handmade wares, personalized candles and knitwear.
