A specially prepared
illustrated lecture on the headstones in Rahara Old Graveyard on Thursday 9th
May at 8.30 PM in Rahara National School will be given by Mary B. Timoney,
archaeologist, in conjunction with William Gacquin. The number of quality
headstones in the graveyard is a reflection of the social and economic history
of what was happening in the parish. The Parish is fortunate in having the
headstones and other memorials recorded by Mathew Beatty and William Gacquin
and published recently in the Rahara book. Mary will explain the symbols on the
headstones and talk about the masons who carved them. She has published
Ballintober Old Graveyard and the Grave Memorials of Co. Roscommon. Many
of the Rahara headstones are illustrated in the book which illustrates over a
thousand pieces of sculpture. The book will be on sale at the reduced
